Generalsekretæren på Haiti, Gwenael Apollon, skriver dette i en epost mandag 18. januar:
"In general, the situation in Haiti is catastrophic. In sum, during the last six days, everyone that I have had an opportunity to speak with or assist has lost someone as a result of the earthquake or is in search of a missing loved one. Today, basic necessities are generally still not available to most of the people affected by the earthquake. "
"Again, while, I thank you very much for your thoughts, prayers and efforts on behalf of Haiti and Haiti YMCA, I want to reassure you that in spite of the communications systems difficulties that I have experienced in the last few days, I am on the job and running on close to all cylinders"
Du kan støtte arbeidet til Haiti YMCA ved å sette inn din støtte på konto 3000 17 16766. Merk bidraget "Haiti YMCA".

YMCA of Haiti (hentet fra Québec YMCA)
|
Founded in 1992.
The YMCA of Haiti addresses the long-standing challenges of poverty, lack of education, and marginalization that face most Haitians and in particular, youth. The programs of the YMCA of Haiti directly contribute to the building of a civil society and the strengthening of community involvement by providing a safe place for youth to meet and participate as volunteers in the planning and implementing of community-based programs and activities for others. At the heart of YMCA of Haiti is a team of trained youth volunteers who plan and implement programs for children and youth in Port-au-Prince, Camp Perrin, and Sainte-Suzanne.
Some of the programs offered by the YMCA are a Reading Club, homework help, English classes, sports activities, dance classes, discussion groups, HIV/AIDS prevention, and leadership training for youth volunteers. The Konbit Centre is the YMCA Youth Centre in Port-au Prince. Its name, chosen by the youth, is a Creole expression meaning the pooling of resources of people from the same community for the accomplishment of great work.
"The YMCA of Haiti provides 3 centres for youth that exemplify the values and the mission of the YMCA. Managed by volunteers, the YMCA offers a space for youth to exchange ideas, create bonds, meet challenges, gain self-esteem and develop volunteer-led activities that will have a positive impact on their communities." YMCA of Haiti
The Ys of Québec support the following programs of the YMCA of Haiti:
School Accompaniment Program: homework and study support for school children and help for youth who want to return to school.
A library: for children and youth to develop their reading skills and further their learning.
Training: on various life skills, including the prevention of sexually-transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS.
Vacation Camp: activities such as drama, art, English classes, sports activities and music.
"Youth Leaders in Action" program: a structured leadership process for Haitian men and women 18-25 years old who are from poor or marginalized communities. This program enables youth to be active, involved citizens, and to become positive role models, youth leaders and trainers for other youth in their communities.

Brev fra verdensforbundet av YMCA, 15. jan.

| | Dr. Bart Shaha, Secretary General of the World Alliance of YMCAs |
Dear Colleagues,
Today, the World Alliance of YMCAs together with the Latin American and Caribbean Alliance of YMCAs (LACA) is launching an international appeal to the YMCA movement in support of the Haiti earthquake victims.
The Haitian people are suffering a crisis of a magnitude that no one can comprehend. On the evening of the earthquake, Gwénaël Apollon, General Secretary of YMCA Haiti reported that he, his family, and YMCA staff had survived, but that YMCA operations had been severely impacted.
The global YMCA movement is responding with a coordinated effort to address the immediate needs of the children, families and devastated communities in Port au Prince, and surrounding areas by providing immediate financial support to respond to the urgent basic needs of those affected. Working in collaboration with the Red Cross, Action Churches Together and other relief and emergency agencies, the YMCA is providing food, water, medicines, blankets and other necessary relief items.
A YMCA assessment team with YMCA volunteers from the Dominican Republic and other countries, is planning to travel to Haiti in the coming hours to assess the situation and deliver critical supplies and support to those impacted. They will also get in contact with YMCA Haiti, with whom communication has been very difficult over the last days, due to the damaged telecommunication system in the country.
Beyond these immediate efforts, the YMCA will also evaluate the long-term needs of the impacted communities to ensure the security and stability of children, youth and families in Haiti.
The coordination of the relief operations will be ensured by the LACA sub-regional office for the Caribbean, based in the Dominican Republic, with the support of the World Alliance of YMCAs.
Through this letter, we appeal to you to do your best to support the relief efforts for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.
We ask for your prayers for the YMCA and the people of Haiti.
With best regards,
Dr. Bart Shaha
Secretary General
